Chin Surgery (Mentoplasty)
Chin implant surgery can improve the underlying structure of a face, giving a more harmonius, attractive appearance. Also known as mentoplasty, chin surgery reshapes the chin either by enhancement with an implant or reduction surgery on the bone. Many times a plastic surgeon may recommend chin surgery to a patient having nose surgery in order to achieve facial proportion, as the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose. Chin surgery helps provide a harmonious balance to your facial features so that you feel better about the way you look.
Chin implants are made out of both solid and semi-solid materials that have been used successfully for years. The method of implantation must be tailored to the individual patient needs. A pocket is created at the chin and an implant is placed into the pocket. The incision may be placed in the crease lines under the chin or in the mouth. Some patients need more extensive surgery to re-position the bone of the chin.
After Chin Surgery
Some swelling and perhaps bruising can occur, but this will be helped by an application of tape or other material. The tape is removed about a week after the surgery is performed. Pain and discomfort last for several days following the procedure, but this can be eased by an oral pain medication. Some facial movements, such as talking and smiling, may be difficult for several days following the surgery, depending upon your personal recovery time.
